The supply of gas suspension to the value-added and export-oriented hosiery sector has been delayed new year orders to the tune of millions of rupees, said Rana Altaf Ahmed senior vice-chairman Pakistan Hosiery Manufacturers and Exporters Association (PHMA) North Zone.
Commenting over the prevailing situation, he said that gas was suspended reportedly after some technical problem in gas line near Sui. He said that five days have been past but the gas supply has not been restored. He said that production in most of the hosiery units has been suspended for last one week and in case of further delay, they would be unable to dispatch their consignments in time for the New Year sale. He said that they would have to pay fine if they failed to fulfil their commitments with foreign buyers in addition to losing these potential markets.
He demanded immediate gas supply particularly to the export base industry. It will facilitate these units to send their foreign consignments in time, he added. He further said the government should also prioritize its policies with focused approach on export-oriented value-added industry. Rana Altaf also demanded alternative arrangements to supply gas to industrial sector if there was any further delay in the repair of the damaged line. He also stressed the need to expedite work on the import of LNG from Qatar and hoped that this imported LNG will exclusively be allocated for the industrial sector to avoid its shortage during next winter.
