NASA captures stunning blue sand dune on Red Planet

Mars never ceases to amaze us with its uniqueness. First it was a planet-engulfing dust storm and now it seems like the Red Planet has blue sand dunes, as one has been found on the planet.

Using its HiRISE (High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment) camera, NASA’s Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter (MRO) recently took an incredible picture of a big sand dune on the Red Planet in an unusual electric blue color.

The dune was embedded in the field of crescent-shaped dunes present on the floor of the 236km wide Lyot Crater, found around 50 degrees north of the Martian equator and known for its patterned ground, wrote Business Insider.

Mars’ massive dust storm has now entirely engulfed the planet

But, theoretically, the dune isn’t exactly blue in color, its gray and the blue color emerges after ‘enhanced color’ as the NASA officials described the amazing picture, “This particular dune, appearing like turquoise blue in enhanced color, is made of finer material and/or has a different composition than the surrounding.”

Moreover, at present, Mars is battling a fierce sand storm that has now entirely covered the whole planet, thus affecting NASA’s Mars Opportunity rover as well.
