RAHIM YAR KHAN: Fifteen people were killed and twenty others injured when a bomb exploded during the Chehlum procession of Hazrat Imam Hussain (RA) in Khanpur on Sunday, police sources said.
According to a Rescue 1122 official, 15 injured were shifted to Sheikh Zayed Hospital RY Khan and five others admitted to THQ Hospital Khanpur.
The Rangers were also called out in the city to control the situation. However, till filing of this report the situation was completely under control, the police sources claimed.
Talking to APP, Civil Defence Officer Qazi Shabbir confirmed that it was a bomb blast containing about one or one and a half pound of explosive material.
Prime Minister Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani has condemned the bomb blast and expressed sorrow and grief over the loss of lives while the Interior Minister ordered an inquiry into the incident.
Punjab Chief Minister Shahbaz Sharif has also condemned the bomb blast, announced Rs 500,000 as financial assistance to heirs of each dead and ordered the authorities concerned to provide best medical treatment facilities to the injured.
