European stocks climb at open before new Italy debt sale

Published Updated

londonLONDON: European shares rose Friday in opening deals on easing eurozone debt concerns before another bond auction in Italy and after overnight gains on Wall Street and most of Asia.

London's benchmark FTSE 100 index of leading shares rose 0.71 percent to 5,702.69 points, Frankfurt's DAX 30 added 1.02 percent to 6,242.49 points and in Paris the CAC 40 gained 0.76 percent to 3,224.16 points.

Successful bond auctions in Italy and Spain gave European equities and the euro a boost on Thursday, although poor results and weak economic data in the United States later trimmed gains.

Rome's latest bond auction results are expected by investors later this morning at 1000 GMT.

"It would be a surprise if today's auctions showed anything untoward -- I suspect the European Central Bank is fairly active in the background," VTB Capital economist Neil MacKinnon told AFP.
