NAB-Sindh for improved governance to help settle farmers' grievances

KARACHI: Director General of National Accountability Bureau (NAB-Sindh), Mohammad Altaf Bawany here on Tuesday said improved governance can efficiently address corruption related issues in the agriculture sector of the country.

Addressing a seminar "problems faced by farmers due to corruption," organized by Sindh Chamber of Agriculture, he said NAB was fully cognizant of the problems faced by the farmers, particularly those related to land ownership and revenue as well as taxation.

He said emphasizing that efficient governance could otherwise too help address genuine grievances of the farmers and those with stakes in the agriculture sector.

The DG, NAB-Sindh, said menace of corruption cannot be curbed single-handedly and that an effective part is needed to be played by the members of general public is resisting corruption and exposing the corruption.

Bawany assured that problems related to bardaana distribution besides, issue of non-operational district units for computerization and reconstruction of revenue record will soon be taken up.

Issues related to non availability of water to the tail enders, constant decline in water flow to the fields of small farmers, he said needed urgency on part of these owners and to adopt improvisation in agricultural techniques like system of sprinklers, instead of waiting for the water distribution mechanism to be improved by the government.

"Home grown alternative solutions are needed to address the challenges of global warming and so forth," he said assuring the members of the chamber that their complaints as well as suggestions to solve the same will be duly communicated to the concerned quarters.

He also assured the farmers of the province to help redress their genuine grievances in best of his capacities.

Kabool Khatian, President. Sindh Chamber of Agriculture said the seminar was organized to register their grievances through an efficient platform.

The event was also addressed by Abdullah Rafi and attended by large number of growers and farmers hailing from different parts of the province.
