A treason petition against the deposed Prime Minister Nawaz Sharif for his statements regarding Mumbai attacks in 2008 has been filed in Lahore High Court on Monday.

The petition has been filed by leader of Pakistan Awami Tehreek (PAT) Khurrum Gandapur, local media reported. In his petition, Gandapur said that the remarks by Sharif were equal to committing treason.

Sharif has come under severe criticism after his interview to DAWN newspaper was published, in which he said, “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-state actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?” He asked for the explanation as to why the trial regarding it has not been completed.

Nawaz Sharif claims he has many secrets regarding 2014 Islamabad sit-ins

These remarks by the three-time prime minister immediately caught the attention of Indian media, which termed Sharif's statement as a confession of Pakistan’s role in the Mumbai attacks.

Sharif, however, remains adamant that he has said nothing wrong. The ousted prime minister said he will continue to speak the truth as it is his national and moral duty to do so.
