UNITED NATIONS: UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is 'watching' the situation in Indian occupied Kashmir where security forces have stepped attacks on anti-India protestors, his spokesman said Monday.

"We are aware of the press reports about the situation (in Kashmir)," Spokesman Stephane Dujarric told reporters at the regular noon briefing in response to a question from a Pakistani journalist who sought UN chief's reaction to the killing by Indian troops of 10 civilians, including a college professor, on Sunday.

"We are watching the situation," he said, without elaborating.

The secretary-general has all along called on India and Pakistan to resolve the Kashmir dispute through dialogue.

India has deployed more than 500,000 troops in the restive region to suppress the Kashmiri people's growing movement for their UN-recognized right to self-determination.
