ISLAMABAD: National Highway Authority (NHA) through its dedicated efforts in the last one year had successfully attracted private sector investment in road infrastructure and awarded five projects worth over Rs. 373 billion, an official of NHA told APP on Monday.
Besides other benefits, the expected revenue earnings from these five projects is over Rs. 491 billion, he said.
Among the ongoing Build, Operate & Transfer (BOT) projects include 136 km Karachi-Hyderabad Motorway (M-9), which is almost complete, 91 km Lahore-Sialkot Motorway (M-11), and about 300 km Hyderabad-Sukkur Motorway (M-6).
It is worth mentioning that Lahore-Islamabad Motorway (M-2) overlay and modernization project costing Rs 46 billion has been completed on the BOT basis. Other recent BOT project included Rs 0.8 billion Habibabad flyover near Okara.
The Public Private Partnership (PPP) or BOT is a mechanism through which private sector is responsible to arrange financing for the project.
The private party also bears the responsibility of design, construction, operation and maintenance of the project and in return the party is authorized to receive toll/other revenue for a certain period.
