ISLAMABAD: Pir Muhammad Masood Chishti, Vice-Chairman of the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC), strongly condemned the derogatory and offensive remarks reportedly made by Captain (Retd) Muhammad Safdar against the late Asma Jahangir, a distinguished human rights lawyer, eminent advocate and prominent social activist.

In a statement issued by the PBC secretary on Saturday, the vice-chairman said that the use of disparaging language and references to her religious identity to malign her was highly regrettable and deserved strong condemnation. Making such remarks against a deceased woman, who is no longer alive to defend herself or respond, is particularly deplorable and reflects a lack of decency and respect.

Chishti observed that differences of opinion must never become a pretext for personal attacks, hate speech, character assassination or religious intolerance. The invaluable services and contributions of the late Asma Jahangir to the legal fraternity, human rights and the rule of law deserve respect and recognition.

He urged public representatives to exercise restraint and uphold dignity in their statements, and called upon the relevant authorities to take immediate notice and initiate appropriate legal action against those concerned.
