INDONESIA: Indonesia’s aluminium exports in August jumped by 30.7 percent from the prior month to more than 150,000 tons, with over half of the metal going to Western markets, data from the country’s statistics bureau showed on Monday.

A total of 157,880 tons of primary and unwrought alloyed aluminium was shipped overseas in August, more than three times the amount exported a year earlier, the data showed, as Indonesia emerges as a crucial new source of supply in light of outages in the war-hit Middle East.

The total amount of aluminium exported in August is the highest November 2023, according to records on Trade Data Monitor, as Indonesian smelters largely built by Chinese investors ramp up production.

Around 60,000 tons of the August exports went to the US, which typically has a heavy reliance on aluminium from the Middle East. There was also a roughly 17,000 ton shipment to Italy and a nearly 13,000 ton shipment to Montenegro.
