KATHMANDU: Devastating floods near the border with China killed at least 781 people in Nepal, its disaster authority said on Sunday, with 2,502 people missing as rescue efforts continued for a fifth day.

Chinese state media earlier confirmed 16 dead in Tibet and 546 people missing following Wednesday’s disaster, taking the overall toll to 797 dead and 3,048 unaccounted for.

Nepal’s missing list includes 592 foreigners unaccounted for.

It also includes 933 workers on hydropower projects along the river which the torrent crashed through, according to the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Authority.

Nepal’s disaster agency listed 1,910 missing citizens in a update on Sunday.

That includes 562 unaccounted for in the hardest-hit district of Rasuwa.

In India, authorities said they had recovered seven bodies from rivers flowing from Nepal, believed to be flood victims.

However, they are not included in the toll.

Around 85 Americans remain missing after Nepal flood

About 85 Americans remain missing after a devastating flood swept through a remote region of the Nepali Himalayas, the State Department said on Sunday.

The US figure is just a small fraction of the more than 2,500 people that remain missing after the disaster.

Some 781 people have been confirmed dead by authorities after the wall of water, mud and debris tore through the region and overwhelmed entire villages early Wednesday.

State Department spokesman Tommy Pigott told ABC talk show “This Week” that nine Americans have been evacuated and that he was unaware of any US nationals dying in the disaster.

“The remoteness of this location makes getting reliable information difficult. But our dedication remains, our commitment remains,” Pigott said.

The United States and Canada said they would each provide $3.6 million in aide, while the UK has offered $6.8 million. The United Nations released $2.5 million in emergency funding.

Part of the US funding will go towards road repairs and “mobilizing specialized transport options” to reach remote areas with food and other aid, Pigott said.

The onslaught was prompted by a glacial collapse, the US Geological Survey said, with Chinese experts pointing to a “glacier on the southern slope of Lirung Peak in Nepal” that fractured.
