ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for Saudi Arabia in safeguarding its sovereignty, security and territorial integrity, condemning a recent escalation in Houthi attacks against the kingdom.

Sharif made the remarks during a meeting with Saudi Arabia’s newly appointed ambassador to Pakistan, Dr Rajeh Tami Albugamy, who called on the PM, according to an official statement.

He condemned the attacks, which had resulted in deaths and injuries among civilians, including Pakistani nationals, the statement said.

Sharif said Pakistan and Saudi Arabia had consistently supported each other, adding that the Strategic Mutual Defence Agreement and the Makkah Joint Defence Alliance marked significant milestones in their longstanding relations and reflected a shared commitment to regional peace and security.

The PM said bilateral ties had made considerable progress in recent years and reiterated Islamabad’s commitment to strengthening existing institutional mechanisms to expand cooperation across various sectors.

He also thanked the Saudi leadership for its longstanding economic and financial support to Pakistan.

Sharif welcomed Albugamy to Pakistan, congratulated him on his appointment and assured him of Islamabad’s full support in further strengthening relations between the two countries.

He wished the ambassador success in his diplomatic assignment.
