LAHORE: Punjab Governor Sardar Saleem Haider Khan stated that the eradication of terrorism is indispensable for the country’s development.

He noted that the imposition of Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is in accordance with the Constitution. He further emphasized that the bureaucracy and civil officers play a vital role in ensuring good governance. While addressing a delegation of officers undergoing the ‘First Common Training Programme’ of the Sindh Government, at Governor House, Lahore, led by Director General Isa Memon, the governor remarked that security forces and law enforcement agencies play a crucial role in maintaining law and order within the country. He stated that our security forces and army personnel are laying down their lives on a daily basis to eradicate terrorism.

The governor remarked that the imposition of ‘Governor’s Rule’ in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa was a measure of last resort. He clarified that Governor’s Rule is not an unconstitutional act; rather, this provision is explicitly enshrined in the Constitution. He noted that President Asif Ali Zardari made persistent efforts until the final moment, to resolve matters through dialogue. He emphasized that the national interest remains paramount. The governor further said that foreign investment is not possible without establishing peace in the country. He asserted that the system will not function properly unless those who run it are themselves upright. He stressed that an effective system of accountability is essential for good governance. Furthermore, he highlighted that the continuity of the policies is crucial for both good governance and economic development.

The governor stated that civil servants bear the primary responsibility for ensuring the success of government policies. He urged officers to prioritize only the national interest and public welfare while discharging their professional duties. He added that a local government system which devolves authority at the grassroots level is the most effective mechanism for driving national development and addressing the problems faced by the public.

He noted that the people of Sindh do not wish to see the province divided into separate administrative units. He emphasized that all institutions and political forces must adopt a positive approach for the development and progress of country.
