KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Sunday inaugurated the rehabilitated Garden Water Pumping Station at Haroonabad Gutter Baghicha.

The facility would resume water supplies after remaining non-operational for 21 years.

The station, built in 2005, could not operate because it lacked an electricity connection. Its rehabilitation was completed for Rs30.25 million, including repairs to the civil structure, panel and staff rooms, boundary walls, two 125-horsepower motors and installation of new motor control boards and cables.

Wahab said the station would supply water through 24-inch and 18-inch pipelines to Garden, Nishter Road, Ghas Mandi, Ranchore Line, Ramswami, Lyari, Usmanabad, Badshahi Road and adjoining areas.

Around 300,000 residents are expected to benefit from the restoration, while water supplies in Garden, Soldier Bazaar and Lyari would also improve.

Wahab said the facility had remained neglected for 21 years despite being constructed in 2005.

Karachi residents now wanted development, peace and basic services rather than prejudice, division and fear.

”Karachi belongs to everyone living in the city,” he said.

Ethnic divisions and said the city’s development would continue.

He also criticised protests that disrupt Karachi’s roads and business activity, saying political groups should raise their grievances without shutting down the city.
