KARACHI: Karachi Mayor Murtaza Wahab on Friday donated 500 streetlights to the Union Council chairmen and 50 fumigation machines to the Town Chairmen.

He pledged to improve municipal services and restore basic infrastructure in the city, while addressing a ceremony at the Karachi Metropolitan Corporation’s Head Office.

The mayor said the streetlights were being provided in response to requests from the UC chairmen.

It was the fulfillment of a commitment made during the municipal budget session, said the mayor.

“The purpose of providing these modern streetlights is to illuminate the respective areas and restore the lights and vibrancy of Karachi,” Wahab said.

He said the lights had been distributed among the city’s towns without discrimination, while the fumigation machines would strengthen efforts to provide municipal services at the local level.

He also highlighted measures to improve fire safety.

Oxygen masks and other essential equipment had been handed over to the Fire Brigade Department to protect firefighters.

Non-functional fire tenders would also be restored this year and returned to service, he said.

The mayor thanked President Asif Ali Zardari, Sindh Chief Minister Syed Murad Ali Shah and Pakistan Peoples Party leadership for their cooperation in upgrading Karachi’s Fire Brigade Department at a cost of Rs7 billion.

He called for setting aside of political differences in favour of joint efforts to develop the country’s largest city.

The mayor also thanked the Chinese government for its cooperation in fumigation activities in Karachi, saying he had discussed the initiative with the Chinese consul general during celebrations marking the 75th anniversary of Pakistan-China relations.

He said details of KMC development projects were available on the corporation’s website.

Murtaza Wahab said that public funds were being spent transparently.

The mayor said the performance of the City Council elected in 2023 would ultimately be judged by its service to Karachi.

Any achievement would belong to the city’s citizens rather than individual politicians.

On the persistent problem of dog bites, Murtaza Wahab said the KMC Council would have to determine appropriate measures in the city’s best interest.
