  • MoU aimed at strengthening awareness, digital safety and responsible use of online platforms

The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA) and Google LLC signed on Thursday a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) on child online safety.

In a press release, the PTA said that the MoU was aimed at strengthening awareness, digital safety and responsible use of online platforms among children, parents, teachers and caregivers across Pakistan.

“Under the Mou, PTA and Google will collaborate on a Child Safety Program focused on awareness, education and capacity-building, equipping parents and teachers with practical tools and resources to help children navigate the digital world safely,” the statement said.

Key initiatives include developing awareness content in English and local languages, conducting training programs in educational institutions and supporting a nationwide outreach campaign to connect millions of families with localized online safety resources and tutorials.

Children are frequently exposed to sexual and violent material, content not intended for their age group, and may be exploited as content creators or subjected to inappropriate contact with adults

The PTA, in collaboration with the National Commission on the Rights of Child (NCRC), UNICEF, and Telenor Pakistan had launched a parental guide titled “Safeguarding your Child in the Digital Age - Guide for Caregivers & Policy Brief on Child Online Protection” in February 2024.
