KARACHI: The Pakistan Stock Exchange (PSX) came under renewed selling pressure on Tuesday amid heightened geopolitical uncertainty, rising crude oil prices and diminishing prospects of a near-term US-Iran agreement.
The benchmark index closed at 179,846.68 points, compared with 181,310.28 points in the previous session, loosing 1463.60 points or 0.81 percent. The index remained volatile during the session, touching an intraday high of 181,017.29 points before falling to a low of 179,778.99 points.
Business Recorder indices also reflected the bearish trend. The BRIndex100 declined 162 points, or 0.81 percent, to close at 19,848.72 points, with turnover of 676.60 million shares. The BRIndex30 fell 807.67 points, or 1.11 percent, to 72,192.30 points on turnover of 419.05 million shares.
According to Topline Securities, early gains failed to sustain as rising crude oil prices and weaker expectations for a near-term US-Iran agreement weighed on investor sentiment, while profit-taking was witnessed across major index-heavy sectors.
“FFC, LUCK, ENGROH, UBL, and BAHL emerged as the largest drags on the benchmark, collectively eroding approximately 778 points from the KSE-100 index,” the brokerage said in its daily market review.
Trading activity on the Ready Market moderated, with turnover declining to 860.26 million shares from 917.27 million shares in the previous session. Traded value also fell to Rs38.86 billion from Rs44.81 billion.
Meanwhile, Ready Market capitalisation declined by Rs115.94 billion to Rs20.14 trillion, compared with Rs20.26 trillion in the previous session.
Market breadth was strongly bearish. Of 493 companies traded on the Ready Market, 148 closed higher, 311 declined and 34 remained unchanged.
Cnergyico PK remained the most actively traded stock on the Ready Market, with 133.91 million shares changing hands. The stock closed at Rs12.84 after trading between Rs12.62 and Rs13.67.
K-Electric followed with 61.85 million shares and closed unchanged at Rs7.48. Hascol Petrol recorded 45.03 million shares and gained to close at Rs21.47 against Rs20.41.
On the Ready Market, Unilever Pakistan Foods was the top gainer, rising Rs89.50 to Rs25,389.50 per share, followed by Rafhan Maize Products, which gained Rs66.35 to Rs9,300.
PIA Holding Company Limited-B recorded the largest decline, falling Rs496.73 to Rs17,351.67 per share, while Sazgar Engineering Works declined Rs42.85 to Rs1,882.27.
Among Business Recorder sectoral indices, the BR Cement Index suffered the largest percentage decline, falling 1.55 percent to 12,669.48 points, followed by the BR Tech. & Comm. Index, which declined 1.26 percent to 3,708.97 points.
The BR Power Generation and Distribution Index fell 1.06 percent to 27,288.53 points, while the BR Automobile Assembler Index dropped 0.88 percent to 23,992.23 points. The BR Oil and Gas Index declined 0.59 percent to 15,057.67 points, while the BR Commercial Banks Index fell 0.12 percent to 64,074.06 points.
