RAWALPINDI: Security forces on Tuesday shot dead a suspect who allegedly opened fire on a patrolling team on Mall Road.
Security sources said the alleged attacker was identified as Muhammad Hussain, a resident of Khyber District, who opened fire with a 30-bore pistol. The suspect was allegedly an active worker of a political party, they said.
Security sources said weapons, bullets, flags and important documents were recovered from the suspect after the firing incident.
According to a statement issued by Rawalpindi Police, the suspect opened fire at a security forces’ patrol team on Mall Road in Rawalpindi.
A police spokesperson said that as a result of the firing, some security personnel were seriously injured. The security personnel retaliated and killed the alleged attacker at the scene, he said, adding that during the investigation, the suspect’s alleged links were traced through his mobile phone and other belongings recovered from him.
He said further investigation was underway from different angles. He added that law-enforcement agencies remained fully prepared and committed to combating terrorism, violence and activities aimed at creating chaos.
When asked about reports that the suspect killed by security forces in Rawalpindi had links with the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), the party’s Secretary General Salman Akram Raja said that the suspect had no connection with the PTI.
