ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation for the week ended July 30 has recorded a reduction of 0.91 percent when compared with the previous week, mainly decline in the prices of tomatoes by 22.96 percent, chicken by 11.20 percent and electricity charges for Q1 by 9.06 percent.
According to SPI data released here on Friday, other items that witnessed a reduction in prices included bananas by 0.70 percent, sugar by 0.16 percent and pulse moong by 0.15 percent.
On the other hand, major increases were observed in the prices of onions by 7.62 percent, diesel by 4.17 percent, eggs by 3.16 percent, petrol by 2.46 percent, wheat flour by 2 percent, potatoes by 1.93 percent, Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) by 1.90 percent, pulse gram by 1.44 percent, vegetable ghee (2.5kg) by 0.71 percent, pulse mash by 0.69 percent, pulse masoor by 0.64 percent and firewood by 0.15 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, the prices of 27 items, constituting 52.94 percent of the SPI basket, increased; the prices of six items, accounting for 11.77 percent of the basket, recorded a reduction; while the prices of 18 items, representing 35.29 percent of the basket, remained stable.
On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI recorded an increase of 9.05 percent, driven by sharp rises in the prices of tomatoes by 228.71 percent, onions by 95.36 percent, wheat flour by 78.65 percent, LPG by 51.76 percent, diesel by 37.42 percent, petrol by 23.28 percent, gents’ sponge chappals by 16.69 percent, mutton by 16.06 percent, chili powder by 15.20 percent, bananas by 14.69 percent, beef by 13.44 percent and plain bread by 9.69 percent.
On a YoY basis, decreases were observed in the prices of potatoes by 30.89 percent, pulse gram by 19.89 percent, chicken by 19.56 percent, sugar by 17.48 percent, powdered salt by 14.09 percent, pulse masoor by 12.80 percent, eggs by 8.38 percent and pulse moong by 7.38 percent.
Breaking down the SPI by income groups, households with a monthly income of up to Rs17,732 recorded a 1.19 percent reduction, with the SPI declining from 349.80 to 345.63 points. For the Rs17,733-22,888 income group, the SPI fell by 1.37 percent, from 351.58 to 346.77 points.
Households earning Rs22,889-29,517 recorded a 0.97 percent reduction, with the SPI declining from 371.94 to 368.32 points, while the Rs29,518-44,175 income bracket saw the SPI fall by 0.81 percent, from 358.68 to 355.77 points. The highest income group, earning Rs44,175 and above, recorded a 0.68 percent reduction, with the SPI declining from 358.89 to 356.44 points.
