KARACHI: The Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) has forecast rain, windstorms, and thundershowers across the upper regions of the country this weekend, with isolated heavy falls expected in several areas. According to the advisory on Friday, moist currents from the Arabian Sea are continuously penetrating the upper parts and are likely to strengthen on Saturday evening.

At the same time, a westerly wave is also expected to approach the upper parts on the same day.

Under this weather system, Kashmir is expected to experience rain, windstorms, and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls in Neelum Valley, Muzaffarabad, Rawalakot, Poonch, Hattian, Bagh, Haveli, Sudhanoti, Kotli, Bhimber, and Mirpur from the night of July 10 to July 13, with occasional gaps.

In Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa, similar weather with isolated heavy downpours is predicted for Dir, Chitral, Swat, Kohistan, Malakand, Nowshera, Charsadda, Karak, Tank, Lakki Marwat, Swabi, Shangla, Battagram, Buner, Kohat, Kurram, Dera Ismail Khan, Bannu, Waziristan, Bajaur, Mohmand, Khyber, Orakzai, Mansehra, Abbottabad, Haripur, Peshawar, Mardan, and Hangu, specifically on July 11 and 12.

For Punjab and Islamabad, scattered rain, windstorms, and thundershowers with isolated heavy falls are expected in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Murree, Galliyat, Attock, Chakwal, Jhelum, Mandi Bahauddin, Gujrat, Gujranwala, Hafizabad, Wazirabad, Faisalabad, Khushab, Sargodha, Lahore, Sheikhupura, Sialkot, Narowal, Sahiwal, Jhang, Toba Tek Singh, Nankana Sahib, Chiniot, and Okara on the 11 and 12.

Other districts including Noor Pur Thal, Bhakkar, Mianwali, Layyah, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Dera Ghazi Khan, Multan, Khanewal, Lodhran, Muzaffargarh, Kot Addu, Rahim Yar Khan, and Rajanpur will also receive rain from the evening or night of the July 11 through July 12, with occasional breaks.

In Gilgit-Baltistan, rain and thunderstorms are expected in Diamir, Astore, Ghizer, Skardu, Hunza, Gilgit, Ghanche, and Shigar from the evening of July 11 to 13, again with occasional gaps.

Balochistan will see isolated rain and windstorms in its northern and northeastern parts, including Zhob, Sherani, Kohlu, Barkhan, Dera Bugti, and Khuzdar on the 11th and 12th.

Sindh, however, is expected to remain mostly hot and very humid, though isolated rain and thundershowers are possible in Tharparkar, Sukkur, Shikarpur, Larkana, Dadu, and Jacobabad on July 12 or 13.

The meteorological department has warned that strong winds and lightning could damage weak structures such as solar panels, electric poles, and billboards during this period.

Landslides are likely in vulnerable areas of upper Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Gilgit-Baltistan, and Kashmir on the 11th and 12th, while water flow may increase in local streams and nullahs in those regions as well as in the hill torrents of Dera Ghazi Khan.

Urban flooding from heavy rains is possible in Islamabad, Rawalpindi, Peshawar, Gujranwala, Lahore, and Faisalabad on the same days. Tourists and travelers are advised to take extra caution and avoid unnecessary travel, while farmers are urged to manage their crop activities and protect their livestock in light of these conditions.

The forecast suggests that the current hot and humid spell will subside during this period, and all concerned authorities have been advised to remain vigilant and take necessary precautions to prevent any untoward situations.
