ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif on Friday reaffirmed the country’s commitment to multilateral diplomacy and support for the United Nations, calling for a rules-based international order founded on international law.

The prime minister made the remarks in separate meetings with former Senegalese President Macky Sall and Rebeca Grynspan, two candidates seeking to become the organisation’s next secretary-general.

Talking to Sall, the prime minister said Pakistan remained committed to the principles of the UN Charter and backed the UN as the cornerstone of international cooperation at a time of rising geopolitical tensions, prolonged conflicts and growing development challenges.

According to a statement issued by the Prime Minister’s Office’s (PMO), PM Shehbaz said effective multilateral institutions were essential to promoting global peace, security and sustainable development, and called for the faithful implementation of UN Security Council resolutions and greater respect for international law and treaty obligations.

In separate meetings with both candidates, the prime minister reiterated that the next UN secretary-general should strengthen the organisation by advancing its three core pillars – peace and security, development, and human rights – in a balanced, inclusive and effective manner.

He also highlighted Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the UN through peacekeeping operations, development cooperation and multilateral diplomacy.

Sall thanked Pakistan for its contributions to the UN and praised its role in promoting international peace, dialogue and cooperation, the statement said.

In a separate meeting, Grynspan reaffirmed the importance of multilateral cooperation, while the prime minister reiterated Pakistan’s support for the purposes and principles of the UN Charter and called for more effective implementation of UNSC resolutions.

PM Shehbaz also stressed the need for balanced progress across the UN’s three pillars and faster implementation of the global development agenda alongside stronger international cooperation to address challenges facing developing countries.

Grynspan praised Pakistan’s longstanding contributions to the UN and commended its constructive role in recent regional peace efforts, the statement said.

The UN is expected to appoint its next secretary-general later in 2026. The successful candidate will take office on January 1, 2027, for a five-year term, succeeding António Guterres. Six official candidates are currently in the running for the post.
