KARACHI: The Government of Sindh has initiated effective and decisive measures to curb wheat hoarding, artificial shortages, and profiteering by making a principled decision to introduce stock limits for flour mills and licensed wheat traders.

In this regard, a high-level meeting was held at the Sindh Secretariat, jointly chaired by Sindh Minister for Law and Home, Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, and the Provincial Minister for Food. The meeting was attended by the Secretary Law, Secretary Food, and senior officials of the relevant departments. It was convened to implement the decision taken by the Provincial Cabinet a day earlier.

The meeting reviewed in detail the legal and administrative measures aimed at ensuring the fair availability of wheat, maintaining market stability, preventing hoarding, and safeguarding public interests.

Discussions also focused on the mechanism for determining stock limits for flour mills and licensed wheat traders, as well as the framework for effective monitoring and enforcement.

Addressing the meeting, Sindh Minister for Law and Home Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar said that the Government of Sindh is pursuing a zero-tolerance policy against the creation of artificial shortages, hoarding, and profiteering. He directed the relevant authorities to finalize stock limits for flour mills and wheat traders at the earliest and present a comprehensive policy without delay. He emphasized that ensuring the fair availability of wheat and maintaining market stability are among the Sindh Government’s top priorities. He further directed that all legal and administrative measures required for the effective enforcement of stock limits be finalized promptly.

He warned that strict legal action would be taken against anyone violating the prescribed stock limits, adding that exploitation of the public would not be tolerated under any circumstances.

Speaking on the occasion, the Provincial Minister for Food stated that the government’s primary objective is to ensure the uninterrupted availability of wheat, maintain price stability, and protect the interests of the public at all costs. He directed the concerned authorities to ensure strict enforcement of the prescribed stock limits, take indiscriminate action against hoarding and profiteering, and maintain an effective monitoring mechanism through the district administration and relevant departments.

The meeting reaffirmed the Sindh Government’s commitment to ensuring the availability of wheat and flour at affordable prices, eliminating hoarding, and maintaining transparency in the market through all necessary measures.
