KARACHI: Managing Director of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB), Tariq Ali Nizamani, has ordered strict action against companies and officials involved in transporting construction debris mixed with municipal waste to landfill sites.

SSWMB will hesitate to take all kinds of legal actions to ensure transparency and improve operational efficiency.

Chairing a meeting on waste management operations, the MD directed that any waste consignment found containing construction debris will be immediately rejected and all such trips will be cancelled on the spot.

He warned that companies violating the rules would face stringent legal action under contractual terms, which may be termination of agreements and blacklisting.

Nizamani emphasised that only municipal or household waste would be accepted at landfill sites, and under no circumstances would construction debris or unrelated materials be allowed. He made it clear that negligence or non-compliance with Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) would not be tolerated.

The meeting also reviewed staffing issues related to sanitation operations. The MD instructed all contractors to immediately address shortages of sanitary workers across districts to ensure uninterrupted cleanliness operations. Companies were further directed to maintain accurate and transparent records of their workforce.

To strengthen monitoring, additional responsibilities have been assigned to field officers, who will conduct surprise inspections at landfill sites and across operational areas. These inspections will assess adherence to SOPs, movement of vehicles, nature of waste, and overall operational performance to promptly identify any irregularities.

SSWMB Chief reminded that the civic agency’s prime responsibility is to provide citizens with high-quality sanitation services and to establish a waste management system at landfill sites in line with international standards.

He stressed the need for all stakeholders to perform their duties with integrity and professionalism.
