ISLAMABAD: Foreign Office spokesperson Tahir Andrabi has rejected any attempt to invoke baseless allegations of terrorism as a pretext for putting the Indus Waters Treaty (IWT) in abeyance and obstructing the lawful flow of Pakistan’s share of the Indus waters.

“The real issue is not terrorism. The real issue is the growing disposition within the Indian leadership to treat a shared international river system as a strategic asset that can be controlled, withheld, or diverted at will. This mindset of unilateral appropriation is fundamentally incompatible with the letter and spirit of not just the Indus Waters Treaty but the relevant International Law,” the spokesperson said while addressing the weekly media briefing on Thursday.

Andrabi added that Water is not a tool of coercion or political pressure. Any attempt to deny Pakistan its legitimate share of the Indus waters constitutes a clear violation of India’s international legal obligations and undermines the credibility of its commitment to treaty-based relations.

To a query, the spokesperson said that if there is any country that wants to involve itself with both countries to help with the matter of peace and security, then Pakistan is willing to come forward. He said Pakistan has no skeletons to hide while India avoids international involvement. Pakistan has a very strong position on all the matters about India.
