ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index-based inflation increased by 0.47 percent during the week ended May 14, mainly due to a rise in the prices of tomatoes by 22.13 percent, gents’ sponge chappals by 16.69 percent, and ladies’ sandals by 7.15 percent.
Weekly inflation data released by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics on Friday showed increases in the prices of wheat flour (4.94 percent), diesel (3.76 percent), petrol (3.73 percent), onions (2.98 percent), bananas (1.93 percent), potatoes (0.74 percent), curd (0.54 percent), fresh milk (0.48 percent), and sugar (0.46 percent).
On a year-on-year (YoY) basis, the SPI recorded an increase of 14.52 percent, driven mainly by higher prices of petrol (64.23 percent), diesel (61.61 percent), wheat flour (57.56 percent), electricity charges for Q1 (52.58 percent), onions (50.06 percent), liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) (48.34 percent), tomatoes (40.66 percent), mutton (15.79 percent), chili powder (15.20 percent), garlic (14.36 percent), beef (12.96 percent), and bananas (11.86 percent).
According to the PBS, on a week-on-week (WoW) basis, major declines were recorded in the prices of chicken (6.34 percent), eggs (3.83 percent), garlic (2.20 percent), LPG (1.23 percent), pulse mash (0.63 percent), pulse gram (0.37 percent), pulse masoor (0.28 percent), pulse moong (0.18 percent), and mustard oil (0.01 percent).
During the week, prices of 23 out of 51 items, accounting for 45.10 percent of the SPI basket, increased, while prices of nine items, representing 17.65 percent of the basket, declined. Prices of 19 items, constituting 37.25 percent of the basket, remained unchanged.
On a YoY basis, major decreases were observed in the prices of potatoes (43.07 percent), pulse gram (21.33 percent), chicken (20.67 percent), eggs (18.22 percent), sugar (15.04 percent), powdered salt (13.26 percent), pulse masoor (12.24 percent), and pulse moong (2.03 percent).
