3.4-magnitude earthquake jolts Karachi: PMD

A mild earthquake measuring 3.4 on the Richter scale struck Karachi on Saturday afternoon, the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) said.

According to the PMD, the tremor was recorded at 2:13pm at a depth of 10 kilometres. The epicentre was located around 24 kilometres northwest of Malir.

No immediate reports of damage or casualties were received.

A series of moderate earthquakes earlier struck the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan on Saturday morning, with tremors felt across several northern areas of Pakistan, including Shangla.

According to the PMD, the first seismic activity was recorded at 7:54am with a magnitude of 5.5 on the Richter scale. The quake originated at a depth of 199 kilometres. This was followed shortly after by a second 5.2-magnitude earthquake at 8:16am, which struck at a depth of 190 kilometres in the same mountainous region.

The epicentres for both tremors were located in the Hindu Kush region of Afghanistan. While the shocks caused brief panic in parts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, there were no immediate reports of casualties or structural damage.
