ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Index (SPI)-based inflation for the week ending April 9 increased by 1.93 percent, mainly due to hike in the prices of diesel by 54.71 percent, petrol 17.86 percent, tomatoes 9.35 percent, and Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) 8.61 percent, according to weekly data released on Friday by the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

Other items that witnessed an increase in prices included potatoes 4.13 percent, onions 3.84 percent, eggs 3.77 percent, beef 1.07 percent, mutton 1.05 percent, cooked daal 0.88 percent, georgette 0.66 percent, and bread 0.47 percent.

On the other hand, a reduction was observed in the prices of garlic 3.78 percent, bananas 3.39 percent, chicken 1.05 percent, wheat flour 0.73 percent, vegetable ghee 2.5 kg 0.24 percent, cooking oil 5 litre and pulse mash 0.07 percent each and gur 0.01 percent.

During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 28 items which constitutes 54.90 percent if SPI basket increased, prices of eight items which is 15.69 percent of the basket recorded a reduction and prices of 15 items which is 29.41 percent of the basket remained stable.

The year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 12.15 in sensitive price index owing to significant increase in the prices of diesel by 101.02 percent, LPG 65.86 percent, Petrol 48.70 percent, onions 37.80 percent, wheat flour 30.10 percent, gas charges for Q1 29.85 percent, tomatoes 23.07 percent, chillies powder 15.20 percent, mutton 14.98 percent, beef 13.95 percent, powdered milk 10.23 percent and bananas 7.78 percent.

On YoY basis a decrease was observed in the prices of potatoes 46.32 percent, pulse gram 18.83 percent, salt powder 12.78 percent, pulse masoor and sugar 11.52 percent each, Chicken 9.69 percent, pulse moong 1.87 percent and tea Lipton 1.14 percent.

Breaking down SPI by income groups, households with a monthly income of up to Rs 17,732 saw a 0.75 percent increase, with SPI rising from 331.69 to 334.17 points. For the Rs 17,733-22,888 income group, SPI increased by 0.1.02 percent, jumping from 335.33 to 338.78 points.

Households earning Rs 22,889-29,517 recorded a 1.17 percent rise from 356.83 to 361.01 points, while the Rs 29,518-44,175 bracket saw SPI climb by 1.56 percent from 344.69 to 350.05 points. The highest income group, Rs 44,175 and above, recorded a 2.50 percent increase, taking SPI from 349.18 to 357.90 points.
