ISLAMABAD: Opposition members on Friday staged a protest in the National Assembly against the government’s massive hike in petrol prices, chanting slogans and surrounding the Speaker’s podium in a show of defiance. As a result, the Speaker adjourned the House without taking up any business.

When Deputy Speaker of the National Assembly Ghulam Mustafa Shah started the sitting, opposition members, particularly from the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), sought the floor to speak on the recent increase in petroleum prices, but the Speaker said he would allow it after the question hour session. However, the opposition members insisted on speaking on the floor of the House.

After that, the opposition members stood up from their seats and started protesting and chanting slogans. The lawmakers continued chanting slogans while surrounding the Speaker’s podium in a show of defiance. Due to the uproar and strong opposition, the House was disrupted, contributing to the ongoing volatility of the session. The protest intensified, leading to the disruption of the session, and the Deputy Speaker had to adjourn the House without taking up any business.
