KARACHI: Sindh Chief Minister’s Special Assistant for Human Rights Rajvir Singh Sodha on Wednesday said the establishment of district human rights committees marks a significant step towards decentralising the protection of fundamental rights and ensuring access to justice at the grassroots level.
He was speaking at a training workshop organised by the Human Rights Department in Karachi for members of the newly constituted committees from across Sindh.
Officials said the committees have been formed in all 30 districts of the province under the chairmanship of Deputy Commissioners. Each body includes representatives from revenue, social welfare and district administration offices, along with members of civil society, to ensure a coordinated and inclusive approach to addressing human rights issues.
The workshop aimed to enhance the capacity of committee members, strengthen inter-agency coordination and improve understanding of legal obligations and institutional responsibilities.
Senior officials underscored the importance of district-level mechanisms in ensuring swift redress of public grievances and more effective enforcement of rights.
Participants received detailed briefings on fundamental rights and the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, with particular emphasis on aligning international principles with provincial policies.
Dedicated sessions were also held on women’s protection laws and labour rights, focusing on legal remedies and mechanisms to support vulnerable and marginalised groups. “The creation of these committees reflects our resolve to take the human rights framework to the grassroots, so that every citizen is ensured protection and access to justice,” Sodha said.
He noted that the committees would serve as a critical link between the government and the public, facilitating early identification of issues and timely intervention. “Capacity-building and awareness are central to this effort. Through such initiatives, we are enabling officials and community representatives to perform their roles more effectively,” he added.
Reaffirming the government’s commitment, Sodha said the provincial administration would continue to strengthen institutional systems across all districts to promote human rights, transparency and accountability.
