Earth Hour on 28th: President calls for joint efforts to protect environment

ISLAMABAD: President Asif Ali Zardari has called for collective action to protect the environment, urging citizens to take part in the global observance of Earth Hour on March 28, 2026.

In a message issued ahead of the annual event, the President emphasized that Earth Hour serves as a global reminder of the shared responsibility to safeguard the planet. He noted that Pakistan stands with the international community in promoting the responsible use of natural resources and reducing environmental impact.

Highlighting this year’s theme, “Give an Hour for Earth,” President Zardari said the initiative encourages individuals to reflect on how daily choices affect the environment. While switching off lights for one hour is symbolic, he stressed that it also promotes practical steps in homes, workplaces, and communities to support environmental protection.

The president underscored the need for a balanced approach to development, warning that increasing pressure on natural systems is limiting the planet’s ability to sustain life. He called for energy use, consumption patterns, and agricultural and industrial practices to remain within environmental limits.

Despite contributing less than one percent to global greenhouse gas emissions, Pakistan remains among the countries most vulnerable to climate change, he said. He pointed to recent floods, recurring heatwaves, and droughts as clear indicators of the growing threat, adding that farmers, urban populations, and water systems are already facing serious challenges.

Reaffirming Pakistan’s commitment to global climate action, President Zardari said the country continues to support the goals of the Paris Agreement. He noted that national policies are focused on climate-resilient development, including sustainable agriculture, improved water management, and the transition to renewable energy.

He also highlighted ongoing initiatives such as the Upscaling Green Pakistan Programme, Living Indus, and Recharge Pakistan, which aim to restore ecosystems, enhance water management, and strengthen resilience against climate-related risks.

The president urged citizens to switch off non-essential lights for one hour on the evening of March 28, encouraging them to use the time to reflect on conserving energy and promoting sustainable living.
