ISLAMABAD: Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said on Saturday that Pakistan Scouts could play an effective supporting role alongside the government in addressing national challenges, natural disasters and emergency situations.

In a message issued in connection with Annual World Scouts Day, being observed today (Sunday), he said the day was marked in Pakistan and across the globe with renewed commitment to promoting the constructive role of young people in society.

Expressing confidence in the organisation’s future role, he said Pakistan Scouts would continue to fulfil its social responsibilities and contribute positively to the country’s development and prosperity.

He said the day highlighted the need for harnessing the mental, physical and individual capabilities of youth to enable their positive contribution to communities.

The global scouting movement, founded in 1907 by Robert Baden-Powell, has grown into the world’s largest youth organisation, he said.

In Pakistan, he added, the Pakistan Boy Scouts Association, with around 750,000 members, continues efforts to advance the movement’s objectives. Sharif said Muhammad Ali Jinnah, the country’s founder, took oath as Pakistan’s first Chief Scout on December 22, 1947, describing it as a source of national pride.

He recalled that Jinnah had underscored the importance of scouting in shaping young lives, saying that building a safe, transparent and prosperous world begins with instilling a spirit of service and selfless practical training in individuals.

“Jinnah stressed the need to cultivate integrity in thought, word and deed among young people from an early age as a central aim of scouting,” he added.

Sharif said the spirit of selfless social service enables individuals to contribute to national progress, adding that positive personal character forms the foundation of collective welfare and social responsibility.
