ISLAMABAD: The Capital Development Authority (CDA), in collaboration with the National Press Club, launched the Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2026, setting an ambitious target of planting one million environment-friendly trees across the federal capital to enhance green cover and environmental sustainability.

The campaign was inaugurated by Muhammad Ali Randhawa, Chairman CDA and Chief Commissioner Islamabad, with participation from senior office-bearers of the press club and a large number of journalists. Trees were planted at the ground opposite the National Press Club as part of the drive.

Speaking to the media, the CDA chairman said that for the first time in Islamabad’s history, modern technology is being used in a plantation campaign through a digital tree census. He explained that QR codes are being affixed to trees to record botanical details, plantation locations, and information about the individuals or institutions responsible, ensuring better care and monitoring.

Randhawa added that the campaign focuses on planting local, fruit-bearing, and shade-providing trees, while seed balls are also being dispersed in the Margalla National Hills to preserve the area’s natural ecosystem. He further highlighted the launch of dedicated electric bus routes for journalists and the establishment of modern digital bus stops as part of CDA’s broader eco-friendly initiatives.

President Pakistan Federal Union of Journalists Afzal Butt welcomed the initiative, assuring full participation of the journalist community. He stressed that journalists should not only criticise but also actively support positive national causes, urging the community to make tree plantation a social trend.

National Press Club Secretary General Nayyar Ali pledged continued support and care for the planted trees, while Finance Secretary Waqar Abbasi noted that paper mulberry trees are being removed and replaced with environment-friendly species. He called for widespread media support to promote environmental awareness among the public.

The Spring Tree Plantation Campaign 2026 aims to improve Islamabad’s environmental health, expand green spaces, and encourage citizens especially journalists and students to actively contribute to protecting the city’s ecosystem.
