The Rupee: Marginal gain

KARACHI: Pakistan rupee posted marginal gain for another week as it appreciated by Re0.09 or 0.03 percent against the US dollar in the inter-bank market.

The local unit closed at 279.62, against 279.71 it had closed the week earlier against the greenback, according to the State Bank of Pakistan (SBP).

The inflow of overseas workers’ remittances into Pakistan stood at USD3.46 billion in January 2026, SBP data showed.

Remittances increased by nearly 15.4 percent year-on-year (YoY), compared to $3.0 billion recorded in the same month last year. Monthly remittances were down 4 percent from USD3.59 billion in December.

SBP’s foreign exchange reserves increased by USD21 million during the week ended February 6, 2026, reaching USD16.18 billion. The country’s total liquid foreign reserves stood at USD21.38 billion.

SBP Governor Jameel Ahmad during the previous week said the country’s economy was projected to grow between 3.75 percent and 4.75 percent in FY26, signalling a gradual recovery amid improving macroeconomic indicators.

Open-market rates

In the open market, the PKR gained 7 paise for buying and 9 paise for selling against USD, closing at 280.16 and 280.66, respectively.

Against Euro, the PKR lost 1.69 rupee for buying and 1.70 rupee for selling, closing at 331.89 and 334.80, respectively.

Against UAE Dirham, the PKR lost 5 paise for buying and 4 paise for selling, closing at 76.55 and 77.29, respectively.

Against Saudi Riyal, the PKR gained 3 paise for buying and 4 paise for selling, closing at 74.79 and 75.37, respectively.
