LAHORE: The Ramazan Nigehban Bachat Festival has commenced at Jillani Park, offering discounted essential food items along with family-oriented entertainment and cultural activities for citizens of Lahore.
Special Assistant for Food Safety and Consumer Protection Salma Butt, while visiting the festival, said the initiative aims to provide maximum relief to low-income and deserving segments of society in line with the directives of the Chief Minister Punjab. She was accompanied by Secretary Food Safety and Consumer Protection Dr Kiran Khurshid and Chairman Sahulat Bazar Authority Afzal Khokhar.
Salma Butt stated that the festival will continue until February 15 (Sunday) and reflects the provincial government’s pro-people policies to ease the financial burden on citizens ahead of Ramazan.
Secretary Food Safety Dr Kiran Khurshid said the administrative arrangements for the festival are being jointly managed by the Punjab Agriculture Marketing Regulatory Authority (PAMRA), Punjab Sahulat Bazar Authority, Punjab Food Authority and the Parks and Horticulture Authority (PHA), operating under the Food Safety and Consumer Protection Department.
She said essential commodities including flour, ghee, pulses, sugar, rice, fruits and vegetables are being made available at subsidised rates. More than 150 grocery and food stalls have been set up to ensure uninterrupted supply of daily-use items.
Dr Kiran further added that special programmes promoting religious harmony during Ramazan have also been arranged, with participation expected from people belonging to different schools of thought. Alongside food stalls, local culture, traditions and regional heritage are being highlighted through various events.
A qawwali night has also been planned, featuring renowned folk singer Arif Lohar and Tahseen Sakina. The festival will remain open daily from 10:00am to 10:00pm, providing a safe and family-friendly environment.
Dr Kiran said discounts of over 20 percent are being offered on various items, while the Punjab Food Authority teams are continuously monitoring quality standards, prices and availability of essential food products at all stalls.
