LAHORE: The Punjab government has allotted 2,000 free plots in 19 districts under the ‘Apni Zameen, Apna Ghar’, and the successful applicants have also been assigned their respective block and plot numbers through a balloting.
Punjab Housing Minister Bilal Yasin on Friday conducted the computerised balloting of plot numbers, and Punjab Housing Secretary Noor-ul-Amin Mengal and Punjab Housing and Town Planning Agency (PHATA) Director General Sikandar Zeeshan were also present on this occasion.
On this occasion, the Minister stated that in the coming days, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif will formally distribute allotment letters to the successful applicants. He emphasised that the plots are being provided completely free of cost, without any fee. Beneficiaries will also be eligible to apply for interest-free loans under the ‘Apni Chhat, Apna Ghar’ programme to construct their homes.
He clarified that decades-old, unoccupied PHATA schemes have been transformed into public housing projects. While private sector land in surrounding areas is being sold at prices as high as Rs 2.5 million per marla, the chief minister has fulfilled her promise of providing housing to deserving families, he added.
The plots were allotted through transparent balloting to individuals, including street vendors, shopkeepers, drivers, mechanics, and daily wage earners. The recipients expressed their disbelief and gratitude, stating that receiving a free government plot without any recommendation was beyond expectation.
Three-marla plots are being provided in Jhelum, Kasur, Okara, Attock, Bhakkar, Layyah, Lodhran, Sahiwal, Rajanpur, Vehari, Chiniot, Jhang, Faisalabad, and Gujrat. Meanwhile, residents of Mandi Bahauddin, Bahawalpur, Bahawalnagar, Sargodha, and Khushab are also receiving free plots under the scheme.
