PM Shehbaz reaffirms support for Gilgit-Baltistan in meeting with CM Amjad

Prime Minister Muhammad Shehbaz Sharif met with the newly appointed chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan, Amjad Hussain, in Islamabad on Tuesday to discuss overall regional affairs and ongoing development initiatives.

During the meeting, the prime minister congratulated CM Amjad Hussain on assuming office and reiterated the federal government’s firm commitment to working closely with the newly elected GB administration for the welfare and prosperity of the region’s people.

PM Shehbaz highlighted that the federal government is taking active steps to promote sustainable development across Gilgit-Baltistan in sectors such as renewable energy, tourism, infrastructure, healthcare, and education.

The government is prioritising a 100-megawatt solar power project to address local energy needs, he said. He added that it is going to establish Daanish Schools and a Pakistan Asaan Khidmat Centre in Gilgit to improve public service delivery.

The meeting was also attended by Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Senator Mohammad Ishaq Dar, Minister for Planning Ahsan Iqbal, and Minister for Economic Affairs Ahad Khan Cheema.

Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP)’s Amjad Hussain on July 6 sworn in as the chief minister of Gilgit-Baltistan in a ceremony attended by his party chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari.

Advocate Hussain was elected for the role on June 22 following the June 7 elections, in which the PPP emerged as the largest party, with 12 seats in the 24-member GB assembly.

The PPP had decided to form a government in GB with the support of the PML-N, mirroring the arrangement at the federal level.
