ISLAMABAD: The legislators from the two sides of the aisle in the Upper House of the Parliament joined hands on Monday in urging the government to launch a thorough probe into the recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan, and bring to justice the elements involved in this debacle.

Through a resolution unanimously passed by the Senate, the House urged the government to ensure a transparent, swift, and conclusive investigation into the incidents and bring the perpetrators, facilitators, and local and international sponsors of terrorism to justice in accordance with law.

Law Minister Azam Tarar moved the resolution in the maiden meeting of the 358th Senate session, presided over by Deputy Chairman Senate Syedaal Khan.

The resolution called upon the federal and provincial governments to further strengthen intelligence coordination, border security, and counter-terrorism mechanisms, with special focus on Balochistan.

The Upper House, in its resolution, strongly condemned the recent terrorist attacks in Balochistan, and expresses deep condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing a speedy recovery to the injured.

The Senate paid tribute to the courage and sacrifices of the security forces and law enforcement agencies who continue to lay down their lives in the line of duty for the protection of citizens and the defence of the motherland.

The resolution reaffirmed the Senate’s commitment to peace, development, and political inclusion in Balochistan, “recognising that sustainable security is inseparable from socio-economic progress, good governance, and respect for constitutional rights.”

The Senate reiterated the resolve of the Pakistani nation that terrorism shall not be allowed to succeed, and that the unity of the State and the will of the people will prevail over all forces of violence, extremism and terrorism.

The deputy chairman Senate deferred the agenda items that comprised the bills that were scheduled to be presented in the Senate, seeking its nod. “Many important bills have to be passed from the House today,” said the law minister.

However, the deputy chairman said that the related business agenda items have been deferred to hold a thorough debate on Balochistan situation.

Opening the debate, Leader of the Opposition in Senate Raja Nasir Abbas questioned: How did the terrorists manage to enter the Red Zone area in Quetta and unleash terrorism? “The terrorists reached the cities in Balochistan—they kept wandering there and unleashed terrorism for hours,” he said. “Such massive terrorist incidents took place in Balochistan—has anybody resigned?” he asked, demanding the resignation of Chief Minister Balochistan Sarfraz Bugti and Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi.

Abbas said that 80 billion rupees were annually spent on security in Balochistan but to no avail.

Prime Minister’s Political Advisor Rana Sana Ullah said certain suspects were arrested by the authorities in connection with terrorist activities in Balochistan. They are under investigation, and the matter would proceed in the light of this investigation, he added.

“Terrorists should be called terrorists— without ifs and buts—they are not aggrieved parties— calling them aggrieved elements creates confusion; they are just terrorists who spill the blood of the innocent— an indiscriminate action needs to be taken against terrorists regardless of any compulsion,” the senator said.

Meanwhile, Communications Minister Aleem Khan extended an apology to Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP) lawmaker Palwasha Khan over an exchange of heated arguments in a Senate committee meeting in December last year.

The Senate session was adjourned till today (Tuesday).
