KARACHI: A meeting of the Sindh Cabinet’s Sub-Committee on Finance was held here on Monday, which took several key financial decisions related to overall development in the province, including improvement in education, urban facilities and public welfare.
Chaired by the Convener of the Committee and Sindh Minister for Local Government, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, the meeting was attended by provincial ministers Saeed Ghani and Zia-ul-Hassan Lanjar, along with the secretaries and other senior officers from the concerned departments.
The meeting approved the purchase of a historic heritage building located on I I Chundrigar Road, which was termed an important step towards the preservation of Sindh’s cultural heritage and the city’s historical identity.It also the approved the allocation of Rs 900 million for providing modern IT skills to 35,000 students of three major universities—IBA, NED University and Mehran University—under the Peoples Information Technology Programme to enhance employment opportunities for the youth.
Under the Public Health Engineering and Rural Development Department, the approval was accorded for the release of 25 percent of the block allocation amounting to Rs 100 million for the installation of 100 solar water pumps in district Umerkot to ensure clean drinking water in rural areas.
The committee okeyed the project for the installation of a water supply scheme, ultra-filtration plant and drainage system in district Tando Allahyar, seeing it important for the public health.
Approval was given for the release of Rs 100 million under a non-ADP scheme for the immediate initiation of sewerage, electrical and other development works in six boys’ hostels, five girls’ hostels and one teachers’ hostel at the University of Sindh.
Considering financial assistance under a three-year grant for the Sukkur Water and Sewerage Corporation, an amount of Rs 339 million was approved for the financial year 2025-26 to improve the city’s water and sewerage system.
The meeting also approved the Planning and Development Department’s 52 development schemes, for which funds have already been released.
For improving traffic flow in Karachi, approval was given for the immediate release of Rs 100 million on the recommendation of the DIG Traffic for the repair of traffic signals, road markings and other measures. However, the Sindh Secretary Services was directed to resubmit the summary of the Commissioner Karachi in a more comprehensive manner, while the Provincial Minister for Home Affairs directed that traffic management, engineering and relevant institutions be brought under one umbrella to work through an integrated system to provide real relief to the citizens.
At the conclusion, Syed Nasir Hussain Shah stated that the Sindh Government was fully committed to the timely completion of development projects, strengthening of the education sector and improvement of urban facilities. No delay or negligence in public welfare projects would be tolerated.
