ISLAMABAD: The parliamentary committee of the opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Monday passed a resolution calling for the immediate termination of politically motivated and unfounded cases against jailed former prime minister Imran Khan, as well as other political detainees.

Ahead of the crucial National Assembly session, the PTI parliamentary panel, chaired by acting chairman Barrister Gohar Ali Khan, discussed several key political and legal issues affecting the country.

In another resolution, the opposition condemned the ongoing legal actions, describing them as breaches of personal and political freedoms, and violations of democratic principles and human rights.

Key demands included the restoration of legal rights and visitation privileges for Imran Khan’s family, along with the continuation of Khan’s political activities – an entitlement the party argued he holds under the law.

PTI also called for the protection of political leaders’ rights in line with democratic norms, rejecting actions that undermine the core values of parliamentary democracy.

The resolution further emphasised the need for equal justice for all political prisoners, and the restoration of democratic practices, transparency, and public representation.

The opposition expressed gratitude for the recent visit of Tehreek-e-Tahaffuz-e-Aaine-e-Pakistan (TTAP) leaders to Lahore, praising their role in the country’s democratic struggle.

However, PTI sharply criticised the Punjab government’s recent crackdown on party workers during Khyber Pakhtunkhwa Chief Minister SohailAfridi’s visit to Lahore, including the use of batons and the unlawful disruption of political activities.

The party denounced these measures as fascist and undemocratic. At the same time, it also condemned the Sindh government’s interference with political activities, particularly during Afridi’s visit to Karachi, claiming this violated democratic principles and constitutional values.

PTI further condemned the desecration of cultural symbols such as the Sindhi Ajrak and topi, accusing the Sindh government of insulting local traditions.

It also condemned the arrests of PTI workers and the suppression of citizens’ right to assemble, calling these actions flagrant violations of fundamental constitutional rights.

The panel reaffirmed its commitment to a peace agreement reached through the PTI-led peace jirga in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, which sought lasting peace in the region.

The opposition also paid tribute to PTI members who have been unjustly de-seated in national and provincial assemblies.

PTI also called for the country’s democratic forces to unite and draft a new Charter of Democracy, with proposed reforms including the restructuring of the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) to ensure free, fair, and transparent elections.
