KARACHI: Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab on Thursday directed the immediate formation of independent vigilance teams to monitor major arteries of the city. These teams will be responsible for identifying and addressing small and medium-scale repair complaints within 24 hours.
The Mayor was chairing a high-level meeting of the Engineering Department of Karachi Metropolitan Corporation at its Head Office, which reviewed the progress of the ongoing development projects in the city.
The Mayor said that separate emergency tenders have already been executed for minor repair works, with funds allocated from municipal taxes. He emphasized that since both resources and funds are readily available, complaints must be resolved promptly and without delay. Vigilance teams will regularly visit roads and submit progress reports, and issue updates directly to the higher authorities without waiting for public complaints or intimation.“This is the responsibility of officials, not citizens, to identify and report petty road-related issues. Every district must have an active vigilance team to ensure that problems are resolved within 24 hours,” the Mayor asserted. He also warned that strict action will be taken against the Engineering Department in case of non-compliance or failure to resolve issues within the stipulated timeframe.
The officials briefed the meeting on the progress of District Annual Development Programme (ADP), Provincial ADP, and CLICK-funded projects. Senior engineering officials informed that mega projects under CLICK funding have reached a mature stage, with over 70 per cent progress achieved. Several of these projects are expected to be inaugurated before March. The meeting was informed that all funds allocated for Provincial ADP schemes for two quarters had been almost utilized, and the remaining works were being completed within the prescribed timelines.
Mayor Karachi directed the concerned departments to expedite and complete all codal formalities related to the schemes on Natha Khan Road and Jahangir Road.
Emphasizing accountability and delivery, the Mayor said, “The citizens have high expectations from us, and we have already begun delivering tangible improvements across the city. Our focus remains on timely execution, transparency, and visible progress.”
