ISLAMABAD: Chief of Army Staff, Field Marshal and Chief of Defence Forces Syed Asim Munir, called on the nation to unite and emphasised the importance of knowledge and intellectual strength in overcoming the country’s challenges, during an address at the National Ulema and Mashaykh Conference in Islamabad on Wednesday.
Munir highlighted the historical ties between Pakistan and the Islamic world, stating that the concept of the “State of Tayyabah” and the “State of Pakistan” are deeply connected.
He reaffirmed that Pakistan has been bestowed with the honour of being the protector of the two holy mosques in Mecca and Medina, a unique distinction among Muslim nations.
“The defence agreement between Pakistan and other Muslim countries is historic,” Munir said, noting that the nation’s responsibility as the custodian of Islam’s holiest sites is a key aspect of its national identity.
In his remarks, Munir also warned of the dangers of neglecting education and intellectual growth, stating, “A nation that abandons knowledge and the pursuit of education will be overtaken by disorder and corruption.” He emphasised that true respect and power for a nation come from hard work and knowledge, not from division.

The military chief addressed the ongoing issue of terrorism, making a pointed distinction between Pakistan’s stance and that of its neighbouring India.
“Terrorism is not Pakistan’s practice; it is India’s. We do not strike our enemies from the shadows, but confront them openly,” Munir asserted.
Munir further clarified the role of the state in matters of jihad, stating that in an Islamic state, only the state has the authority to declare jihad, reinforcing the idea that national defence and military decisions rest with the government.
He also spoke about Pakistan’s military victories, saying that success in battles comes through the support of Allah and the unity of the people. “Victory in the battle for truth was achieved through Allah’s support,” he said, referring to Pakistan’s military operations against extremism.
He concluded by urging the country’s religious scholars to play an active role in uniting the nation and fostering a broader perspective among the people. “Scholars must work to unite the nation and expand the vision of the people, bringing greater understanding to the masses,” he said.
