ISLAMABAD: The opposition Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) on Tuesday vehemently condemned what it described as “open threats” of imposing Governor’s Rule in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, saying that the party’s two-thirds majority in the province was not a concession, but a direct result of the people’s overwhelming mandate.
In a meeting of the party’s Joint Parliamentary Committee, chaired by PTI Chairman Barrister Gohar, the party lawmakers issued a clear warning: any attempt to replace the democratically elected government of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa with Governor’s Rule would have serious political repercussions.
The session, which saw full participation from PTI members of the National Assembly and Senate ahead of Tuesday’s joint parliamentary session, reaffirmed the provincial government’s mandate, stressing that it was firmly anchored in public support.
The party expressed concern over what it described as “malicious remorse” about the imposition of Governor’s Rule, warning that such actions would not only destabilize the province but could also harm the broader national interest.
The meeting also addressed ongoing grievances regarding the federal government’s handling of KP’s economic, security, and political challenges. PTI lawmakers pointed to the delay in payments under the National Finance Commission (NFC) Award and other financial entitlements as part of a wider pattern of neglect. They also accused the federal government of failing to cooperate on critical security issues, thereby exacerbating the province’s vulnerabilities.
In addition, PTI voiced frustration over the federal government’s disregard for the recently concluded peace jirga in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, where political parties unanimously agreed to a resolution aimed at combating terrorism and restoring law and order. The party criticised the lack of federal consultation on the jirga’s recommendations, which it said had severely undermined coordination between provincial and federal authorities.
Amid rising tensions, the party warned that KP could not afford further conflict, advocating for diplomacy, trade, and business to ensure the province’s stability.
PTI also demanded the immediate release of all political prisoners, including Imran Khan and his wife, Bushra Bibi, calling the charges against them politically motivated.
The party further rejected the recent by-election results, accusing the Election Commission of bias and undermining electoral credibility.
