KARACHI: Sindh Minister for Local Government Syed Nasir Hussain Shah, accompanied by Provincial Minister for Labour and Social Protection Saeed Ghani, directed the immediate removal of the garbage point located under the Jail Chowrangi flyover.
He instructed the officers of the Sindh Solid Waste Management Board (SSWMB) that eliminating garbage dumps is essential to further improve cleanliness standards in the megacity. He said that the quality of household waste collection must be improved so that garbage does not reach dump sites.
During his visit to Shaheed-e-Millat Road, he also directed that road sweeping be further improved. Chairman Jinnah Town Rizwan Sami, Acting Managing Director of SSWMB Ghulam Abbas Memon, Executive Director Ahsan Raza, and other officers were also present during the visit.
The minister further said that, with coordination of the district administration, police, and the concerned TMC, a plan of action should be formulated for the removal of debris so that strict action can be taken against those who dump debris at various locations, and the practice can be stopped across the megacity.
In addition, he visited the GTS Imtiaz and instructed that a strategy be prepared to stop unauthorised individuals from removing reusable items from the garbage and from setting the waste on fire. Chairman Chanesar Town Farhan Ghani was also present on the occasion.
The Local Government Minister said that the waste collection company must ensure that no fires are lit in the garbage. He also instructed that garbage should not be dumped on the adjacent road near GTS Imtiaz, but rather only at designated locations. Dumping waste on the ramp causes trash to blow into the surrounding areas. Taking notice of this, he directed all private solid waste companies to take all possible measures to provide relief to the public.
He further instructed that under Section 144, strict action be taken against those who burn waste and that FIRs be registered against them.
