HYDERABAD: On the occasion of World Diabetes Day, the second international Diabetes Conference was organized at a private hotel through collaboration between the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences Hyderabad and the Department of Biochemistry, University of Sindh, Jamshoro.
The conference was attended by Commissioner Hyderabad Fayaz Hussain Abbasi, government officials, leading public health experts, teachers and a large number of students.
Addressing the conference as chief guest Commissioner Hyderabad Fayaz Hussain Abbasi said that it is essential to raise awareness about diabetes in society and public health institutions so that we can spread this message to the maximum number of people that this epidemic is a silent killer.
He said awareness is the only solution through which we can stop the rising trend of this disease.
He further said, from the platform of the divisional administration, I offer the services of my office let us create a divisional task force on the pattern of the polio program. Just as we have a task force for polio eradication and another for routine immunization, we should also form a similar task force at the divisional level.
This should include representatives from government and private institutions and all relevant stakeholders. The initiative can begin with awareness in schools. As participants of this conference individually and collectively you must all become ambassadors of this message in every institution and every forum, so we can spread it among communities and the general public, enabling them to become more aware of this epidemic.
The Head of the Department of Biochemistry, University of Sindh, Dr Syed Afsheen Shah while addressing the conference said that researchers not only from Sindh’s universities but also from Rawalpindi and other provinces participated in the conference and presented their research findings related to diabetes.
She said these efforts will help bring researchers together and support the search for solutions to the complications of diabetes so that better treatment strategies can be developed.In the current situation, where the use of carbohydrates and fizzy drinks has become routine, it is necessary to conduct comprehensive discussions on solutions to diabetes, she added. She further said that various AI tools were also introduced which can assist in diagnosing diabetic complications and analyzing the overall condition of patients.
The host of the ceremony, Clinical Director of the Asian Institute of Medical Sciences Hyderabad, Dr. Sadiq Memon, said that the diabetes situation in Pakistan has deteriorated to a dangerous level.
