KARACHI: In the backdrop when many people think that the parliament is like a rubber stamp, the government should hold a referendum on the proposed 27th amendment to know about the actual public sentiments, suggested Pasban Democratic Party (PDP) Chairman Altaf Shakoor here Tuesday.
He said it is true that the constitution needs amendments, especially to pave the way for the mega-city government system, but the direct participation of people for this purpose is highly desirable for which a referendum is the most suitable method.
Altaf Shakoor said that the demand for new administrative units in Pakistan is also becoming louder with the passage of time and in any coming constitutional amendment this aspect should also be taken a proper care of.
He said the elite rule in Pakistan is a curse for the common man. He said the elite class people sitting in parliament are not interested in resolving the issues of the masses; hence, the coming amendment must include introduction of the proportionate electoral system.
He said it is necessary that the political system in Pakistan must be refined and further strengthened. He said active and stronger political parties are a must to safeguard the interests of the public. He asked the politicians to develop unity by improving working relationships with all political stakeholders.
He said another major issue is the growing foreign loans that devour more than half of our total budget. He said interest on these loans is more than our defence budget. He said any new constitutional amendment must also include a ban on further loans to save our economy from a total collapse.
