ISLAMABAD: The Consumer Price Index (CPI) based inflation increased to 31.5 percent on a year-on-year basis in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 27.6 percent in the previous month and 12.2 percent in February 2022, says the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

The CPI in the first eight months (July-February) of the current fiscal year on average remained at 26.19 percent compared to 10.52 percent during the same period of the last fiscal year.

On a month-on-month basis, it increased to 4.3 percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 2.9 percent in the previous month and an increase of 1.2 percent in February 2022.

The CPI inflation urban increased to 28.8 percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 24.4 percent in the previous month and 11.5 percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased to 4.5 percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 2.4 percent in the previous month and an increase of 0.9 percent in February 2022.

The CPI inflation rural increased to 35.6 percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 32.3 percent in the previous month and 13.3 percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased to four percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 3.6 percent in the previous month and an increase of 1.5 percent in February 2022.

The Sensitive Price Index (SPI) inflation on YoY increased to 33.6 percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 30.5 percent a month earlier and 18.7 percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 3.7 percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.3 percent a month earlier and an increase of 1.3 percent in February 2022.

The Wholesale Price Index (WPI) inflation on YoY basis increased to 36.4percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 28.5percent a month earlier and an increase of 23.6percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 8.2percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.8percent a month earlier and an increase of 1.9percent in the corresponding month of last year i.e. February 2022.

Measured by non-food non-energy urban increased to 17.1percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 15.4percent in the previous month and 7.8percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 2.2percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.4percent in the previous month, and an increase of 0.8percent in the corresponding month of last year i.e. February 2022.

Measured by non-food non-energy rural increased to 21.5percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 19.4percent in the previous month and 9.4percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 2.6percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.5percent in the previous month, and an increase of 0.9percent in the corresponding month of last year i.e. February 2022.

Measured by 20percent weighted trimmed mean urban increased to 25.1percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to 20.9percent in the previous month and 9.8percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased by 2.9percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 1.5percent in the previous month and an increase of 0.8percent in the corresponding month of last year i.e. February 2022.

Measured by 20percent weighted trimmed mean rural increased to 31.6percent on YoY basis in February 2023 as compared to 27.8percent in the previous month and 11.3percent in February 2022. On MoM basis, it increased to 3.9percent in February 2023 as compared to an increase of 2.1percent in the previous month and an increase of 1.2percent in the corresponding month of last year i.e. February 2022.

Reuters adds: Consumer Price Index (CPI) jumped 31.5% in February year-on-year, the statistics bureau said on Wednesday, the highest annual rate in nearly 50 years, as food, beverage and transportation prices surged more than 45%.
