ISLAMABAD: Finance Division has relaxed a ban on purchase of newspapers by the government offices imposed as part of an austerity drive.

In a letter to all ministries/ division/ departments, Deputy Secretary (Exp-CGA), Adeel Ashraf, noted that first meeting of Austerity Committee was held on September 14, 2022 chaired by finance minister; and was apprised that a number of offices have requested a withdrawal of the ban on periodicals, magazines and newspapers. Further, this ban created problems for hawkers as they became jobless.

According to Finance Division, keeping in view the hardship of newspapers hawkers, the committee decided to relax the ban imposed vide No(1)(ix) of Finance Division’s O.M of July 7, 2022 subject to fulfilment of all codal formalities and meeting the expenditure from within the budget allocated for FY 2022-23.
