LAHORE: Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz (PML-N) senior leader, Mohammad Pervaiz Malik, MNA, died here on Monday due to cardiac arrest. He was 73.

University of Health Sciences (UHS) Vice Chancellor Prof. Dr Javed Akram confirmed that Pervaiz Malik died due to a heart attack. He stated that Malik was brought to Akram Medical Complex.

PML-N Lahore Secretary General Khawaja Imran Nazir said that Pervaiz Malik's funeral prayers will be offered today at 9am at a ground near Gaddafi Stadium. The PML-N has also suspended all the party activities. After hearing this sad news, PML-N leaders and workers thronged his Gulberg residence to offer condolences.

Born on 18th November 1947, Pervaiz Malik had done B.Sc. Honours in Engineering from Aston University. He was also a leading businessman and was elected to the National Assembly five times between 1997 to May 2018. He also served as Minister for Commerce and Textile in the Shahid Khaqan Abbasi's cabinet from August 2017 to May 2018. His son Ali Pervaiz Malik and wife Shaista Pervaiz Malik are also member of the National Assembly.

Pervaiz Malik was President of the Lahore chapter of the PML-N and also served as former secretary finance of the party. Malik had excused himself from the presidency due to his illness but continued to look after party affairs on the leadership's direction, his son Ali Pervaiz said.

The PML-N leadership including party supremo Nawaz Sharif, President Shehbaz Sharif, VP Maryam Nawaz, Hamza Shehbaz and others expressed grief over Malik's death and said the party had lost a sincere leader and a good man".

"He was a sincere brother, friend and ally and his demise is a great loss," Shehbaz said, noting his commitment and loyalty to the party and PML-N supremo Nawaz Sharif. He added that Malik's services for the country; the nation and democracy would be remembered forever. "He was a valuable asset of the party and it will not be possible to fill the gap he has left behind," Shehbaz said.

PML-N Information Secretary Marriyum Aurangzeb remembered Malik as a kind, humble and compassionate man who served the people. She said that his death has had the same effect as that of losing one's father or elder.

PML-N Senator Azam Nazeer Tarar also termed Malik's death a 'great loss for all'.

Information Minister Fawad Chaudhry said the he was 'greatly saddened' by the news and praised the PML-N leader as a "sophisticated, sociable and loving person". "You will be missed," Chaudhry said.
