ISLAMABAD: The Sensitive Price Indicator (SPI) for the week ended April 8, 2021, recorded an increase of 0.60 percent over the last week due to increase in the prices of food items including chicken (11.21 percent), potatoes (9.98 percent), tomatoes (7.51 percent), and bananas (4.99 percent), says the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS).

According to the latest data, the SPI went up from 147.12 points during the week ended April 1, 2021 to 148 percent during the week under review. During the week, out of 51 items, prices of 18 (35.29 percent) items increased, 13 (25.49 percent) items decreased, and 20 (39.22 percent) items remained constant, said the PBS in weekly SPI data. The PBS data further stated that the year-on-year trend depicts an increase of 18.43 percent with most of the items increased mainly chilies powder (139.64 percent), chicken (100 percent), electricity for Q1 (67.03 percent), tomatoes (55.43 percent), eggs (40.90 percent), gents sandal (33.37 percent), match box (30.47 percent), mustard oil (30.21 percent), gents sponge chappal (25.13 percent), and vegetable ghee (21.88 percent), while a major decrease was observed in the prices of garlic (38.82 percent), onions (38.15 percent), moong (16.47 percent), gram (6.69 percent), and masoor (6.01 percent).

The SPI for the consumption groups up to Rs17,733, from Rs17,733 to Rs22,888, Rs22,889 to Rs29,517, Rs29,518 to Rs44,175 and above Rs44,175 per month increased by 0.51 percent, 0.53 percent, 0.61 percent, 0.69 percent, and 0.62 percent respectively.

The commodities, which recorded increase in their average prices include chicken (11.21 percent), potatoes (9.98 percent), tomatoes (7.51 percent), bananas (4.99 percent), mustard oil (0.77 percent), bread plain (0.71 percent), lawn printed Gul Ahmed /Al Karam 1 mtr (0.65 percent), beef with bone (0.52 percent), mutton (0.51 percent), moong (0.50 percent), cooked daal (0.45 percent), Georgette (0.36 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib or other superior quality 1kg pouch each (0.31 percent), cooking oil Dalda or other similar brand (sn), 5 litre tin each (0.31 percent), vegetable ghee Dalda/Habib 2.5 kg tin each (0.20 percent), cooked beef (0.14 percent), milk fresh (0.09 percent), and curd (0.06 percent).

According to the PBS, decrease was observed in the price of sugar (3.07 percent), LPG (2.28 percent), garlic (2.27 percent), eggs (1.41 percent), firewood whole 40 kg (1.32 percent), electricity charges for Q1 per unit (1.28 percent), wheat flour bag 20 kg (0.69 percent), maash (0.46 percent), gram (0.33 percent), onions (0.18 percent), masoor (0.13 percent), rice basmati broken (0.11 percent), and gur (0.01 percent).

The items of prices which remained unchanged during the period under review include rice irri-6/9 (Sindh/Punjab), powdered milk, salt powdered, chilies powder National, tea Lipton Yellow Label 190 gm packet each, tea prepared, cigarettes Capstan 20's packet each, long cloth 57" Gul Ahmed/Al Karam 1 mtr, shirting (average quality) 1 mtr, gents sandal Bata pair, gents sponge chappal Bata pair, ladies sandal Bata pair, gas charges, energy saver, Sufi washing soap, match box, petrol super, hi-speed diesel, and telephone call charges.
