Nagorno-Karabagh: Pakistan welcomes agreement to end military conflict

Pakistan has welcomed the agreement signed by Armenia, Azerbaijan and Russia to end the military conflict over the disputed enclave of Nagorno-Karabakh and said that the agreement would offer a 'renewed opportunity for establishing peace in the South Caucasus region'.

On Tuesday, Russian President Vladimir Putin, Azerbaijani President Ilham Aliyev and Armenia's prime minister signed an agreement in which Azerbaijan will hold on to areas of Nagorno-Karabakh that it has taken during the conflict.

Whereas Armenia has also agreed to withdraw from several other adjacent areas including Agdam over the next few weeks.

In a statement, the Foreign Office said that Pakistan has consistently supported the resolution of the Nagorno-Karabakh dispute in accordance with international law and the relevant UN Security Council Resolutions.

The statement congratulated the government and brotherly people of Azerbaijan on the liberation of their territories. "It is hoped that this will lead to an era of stability and prosperity in the region and will pave way for the return of internally displaced persons to their ancestral lands," FO said.
